History and Basic Principles

Atomic absorption spectroscopy was first developed in the 1950s by Alan Walsh. This technique works based on the absorption of ultraviolet and visible light by atoms released in the gaseous state. Each element has a specific absorption wavelength that depends on its electronic structure. The absorption intensity is directly related to the concentration of the element in the sample (according to the Beer-Lambert law). These basic principles enable precise quantitative analysis.

Sample Preparation

Proper sample preparation is one of the most important steps in AAS analysis. Solid samples must first be dissolved using acid digestion or alkaline fusion methods. Liquid samples may require dilution, filtration, or extraction. Using high-purity chemicals and deionized water is essential to prevent contamination. Additionally, preparing blank samples and calibration standards with a matrix similar to the sample is recommended to increase analysis accuracy.
